Judith Ortiz Cofer’s childhood was one of constant flux. Born in Puerto Rico, her family split their time between their native island and New Jersey. Although Cofer is currently settled in Georgia and writes verse in English, her themes remain inspired by life in Puerto Rico. Writing about her homeland, she has claimed, enables her to stay connected with her heritage.
