Ruth Stone

Born in Roanoke, Virginia, Ruth Stone's work has undeservedly remained under the radar. Stone’s early verse was strongly affected by the 1959 suicide of her husband and her subsequent life as a widow struggling to support three children. She recently gained more attention with her 2002 National Book Award for In the Next Galaxy. Having lived in Vermont since 1957, Stone was named Vermont's poet laureate in 2007. She died in late 2011. Photo: (c) Jane Lindholm

What People are Saying

"Even people who don't particularly enjoy most forms of poetry can still find a poem that they enjoy AND be very good at reciting if they set their minds to it. What makes poetry so appealing is its ability to describe all sorts of different aspects of the human experience in a new and unique light. There is a poem out there for everyone. Even my dad...maybe."
