I Hear America Singing
I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,
The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam, . . .
I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,
The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam, . . .
I heard a Fly buzz - when I died -
The Stillness in the Room
Was like the Stillness in the Air - . . .
I remember, I remember,
The house where I was born,
The little window where the sun . . .
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd, . . .
Since there’s no help, come let us kiss and part.
Nay, I have done, you get no more of me;
And I am glad, yea glad with all my heart, . . .
Why should your fair eyes with such sovereign grace
Disperse their rays on every vulgar spirit,
Whilst I in darkness in the self-same place . . .
An idle lingerer on the wayside's road,
He gathers up his work and yawns away;
A little longer, ere the tiresome load . . .
The sky is cloudy, yellowed by the smoke.
For view there are the houses opposite
Cutting the sky with one long line of wall . . .
In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
. . .
Still sits the school-house by the road,
A ragged beggar sleeping;
Around it still the sumachs grow, . . .
