Ruth Stone

Ruth Stone

Born in Roanoke, Virginia, Ruth Stone's work has undeservedly remained under the radar. Stone’s early verse was strongly affected by the 1959 suicide of her husband and her subsequent life as a widow struggling to support three children. She recently gained more attention with her 2002 National Book Award for In the Next Galaxy. Having lived in Vermont since 1957, Stone was named Vermont's poet laureate in 2007.

What People are Saying

"I went in expecting to lend my voice to the poetry, but found that it was a two-way exchange: the poetry lent its voice to me, as well."
